There are three kinds of bidet, and the right one depends on the toilet you have, whether there's an outlet nearby, and what you want it to do.
A slim unit that mounts under your existing seat and connects to the toilet's cold water line. No electricity, lowest cost, basic controls. Cold water only, which some people find bracing in winter.
Replaces your toilet seat. Warm water, adjustable pressure and nozzle position, heated seat, and usually a warm-air dryer. It needs a grounded GFCI outlet within reach of the toilet. If there isn't one, adding it is the biggest variable in the job.
A one-piece toilet with the bidet built in. Cleanest look and the most features. This is a full toilet replacement, so it makes the most sense when you were already replacing an older toilet or remodeling.
For a seat or attachment, we shut off the supply, install a T-valve on the fill line, connect the bidet hose, mount the unit, and test it under pressure for leaks. The plumbing is simple. The problems come from what's already there:
- Seized shutoff valves. The valve behind the toilet is often original to the house. Old valves stick, drip once they've been turned, or break off. We replace a tired valve rather than trust it.
- Wrong seat for the bowl. Round and elongated seats aren't interchangeable, and some skirted one-piece toilets don't leave room for a mounting bracket. We confirm fit before anything comes out of the box.
- Pressure. A spray that stings is usually a house pressure problem, not a seat problem. We check it.
- Hard water. Mineral buildup clogs bidet nozzles over time. Homes on well water or harder municipal supply in the Triangle see it sooner. A softener or filter keeps the seat working longer.

The valve behind the toilet is often decades old and has never been touched. Forcing it can snap the stem or start a slow drip that damages the floor. Replacing it during the install avoids both.
Electric bidet seats need a grounded GFCI outlet within reach. Many bathrooms don't have one next to the toilet, and an extension cord across a wet floor is not a fix. We'll tell you up front whether an outlet needs to be added.
Sputtering is usually mineral buildup in the nozzle from hard water. A stinging spray is usually high house pressure. Both are fixable, and neither means the seat is bad.
Round seats on elongated bowls, or a bracket that hits a skirted tank, leave the seat loose and the nozzle out of position. Measuring first saves a return trip.

Almost any two-piece toilet takes a bidet attachment or seat. Some one-piece toilets with a skirted or curved tank don't leave clearance for the mounting bracket, so check the model first. An integrated bidet toilet replaces the whole fixture, so fit isn't a concern there.
Only for an electric seat, and only if there isn't already a GFCI outlet within reach of the toilet. Non-electric attachments run on water pressure alone and need no outlet.
A seat or attachment on a toilet with a healthy shutoff valve is usually well under an hour. Replacing a stuck valve, adding an outlet, or installing an integrated bidet toilet takes longer, and we'll tell you what to expect before we start.
Many new parents find rinsing far more comfortable than wiping after delivery, and a warm-water seat is gentler still. A bidet is a comfort upgrade, not a medical treatment, so follow your provider's care instructions and ask them whether it fits your recovery.
