Speeding Up Hot Water Delivery in a Three-Story Apex Home

What we found and did

An Apex homeowner in the 27502 area needed a new 75 gallon natural gas standard vent water heater with a new 5 gallon expansion tank in the attic, plus a Taco circulation comfort kit to improve hot water delivery speed. Nick, Bernard, and Chris installed the 75 gallon natural gas standard vent water heater on the third floor along with the Taco circulation comfort kit. After the installation, the team tested all connections and pressurized the system.

Result

After testing and pressurizing the system, the team found that everything was in perfect working order.

Tankless Water Heater Not Giving Hot Water in Apex

What the customer reported

The homeowner had no hot water, and the controller was not registering for the tankless water heater.

What we found and did

Nick found the tankless unit to be almost 20 years old and in need of replacement versus repair. He provided estimates, and on the second visit Nick and Chris replaced it with a Rinnai RXP199iN recirculating tankless water heater and added a pre-scale filter to protect the equipment. They set the temperature to 120°, verified everything was circulating properly, and checked all gas and water connections for leaks.

Result

After installation, the unit was circulating properly, the gas and water connections were checked for leaks, and everything was functioning properly.

Local conditions

Why quality water heater installation matters in Apex

Summer Heat Stress

Apex's hot, humid summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F put extra strain on AC systems, requiring more frequent maintenance to handle constant use and moisture.

Seasonal Demands

The Triangle's seasonal temperature swings mean HVAC systems must efficiently handle both heating in winter and cooling in summer, with proper tune-ups before each season.

Humidity Management

High humidity levels in Apex cause condensation issues and can lead to mold growth in ductwork if systems aren't properly maintained and sized.

Local Compliance

Local building codes and HOA requirements in Apex neighborhoods require specific permits for HVAC installations and replacements to ensure compliance.

FAQ

Water Heater Installation in Apex: questions answered

Answered by our licensed technicians serving Apex.

How long does a water heater installation take?

A standard tank-to-tank replacement typically takes 2 to 3 hours. If we need to upgrade the gas line, modify venting, or switch from electric to gas (or vice versa), the project may take 4 to 6 hours. We provide a time estimate before starting.

Should I get a gas or electric water heater?

It depends on your home's utility infrastructure and your priorities. Gas heaters have faster recovery rates and lower operating costs in most Triangle-area rate structures. Electric models are simpler to install and maintain. Hybrid heat pump electrics offer the lowest operating costs overall but need space and ambient warmth to perform optimally.

What size water heater does my family need?

For a household of 2 to 3 people, a 40-gallon tank is typically sufficient. Families of 4 to 5 should consider 50 gallons, and larger households may need 65 to 80 gallons or a tankless system. We base our recommendation on fixture count and peak usage patterns, not just family size.

Do I need an expansion tank with my new water heater?

Yes. North Carolina plumbing code requires a thermal expansion tank on any closed plumbing system, which includes most homes with a backflow preventer or pressure-reducing valve on the main water line. We include expansion tank installation as a standard part of every water heater replacement.
