Dexter
June 2026
A Durham homeowner reported no AC upstairs on move-in day. The thermostat was set to 72 but read 86 for over 2 hours, with no air from the upstairs vents while the downstairs unit cooled fine.
Dexter found that the duct supplying the second floor had come loose under the home, blowing cool air in the crawl space. He zip tied the ducts together and sealed the joint with tape.
Bernard & Jeorell
March 2026
Tenants at an apartment in the 27703 area of Durham drilled through a refrigerant line while mounting the TV, leaving the line set punctured.
Bernard and Jeorell found the line set punctured where the drill bit was inserted behind the wall. They removed drywall, cut out the damaged section, and repaired the line set using non brazed fittings. They then put 250 psi of nitrogen into the system to check for leaks (no leaks were detected), pulled a vacuum to manufacturer specs, and added the factory charge of 410A, noting that due to the weather temperature the pressures could not be set perfectly.
Durham's diverse housing stock ranges from historic homes to modern builds, each requiring different HVAC approaches and solutions.
The Bull City's hot, humid summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F demand reliable AC systems with proper maintenance schedules.
Many older Durham homes have ductwork that wasn't designed for central AC, requiring creative solutions and expert retrofitting.
Durham's tree-lined neighborhoods provide shade but also shed debris that can clog outdoor AC units, requiring regular cleaning and maintenance.

Answered by our licensed technicians serving Durham.
We consider it an emergency when you have no cooling at all, when temperatures pose a health risk (especially for elderly family members, young children, or pets), when you notice burning smells or electrical issues from your AC, or when water is actively flooding from your system. If you're unsure, call us. We'll help you determine the urgency.
Emergency calls include a service/dispatch fee plus the flat-rate cost of whatever repair is needed. We provide the repair quote before beginning work so there are no surprises. The total depends on the specific failure: it could be as simple as a $200 capacitor replacement or as involved as a compressor repair.
Turn off the AC system at the thermostat to prevent further damage (especially if you hear unusual sounds or smell burning). Close blinds and curtains on sun-facing windows, use fans to circulate air, and stay hydrated. If water is leaking, place towels or containers to minimize damage and turn off the system immediately.
We charge a standard emergency dispatch fee that applies regardless of when you call. We don't inflate repair prices based on the time of day or day of the week. The repair cost is the same whether it's Tuesday at 2 PM or Saturday at 10 PM.
