AC Kept Freezing Up After a Recharge in Franklinton

What the customer reported

The homeowner's system was freezing up, and a recall visit was set up after an earlier top-off of R-22 on the basement unit. The pantry unit had been found frozen solid from the evaporator to the compressor.

What we found and did

Jeorell believed there is a restriction in the system. He started to charge the system, but it would still freeze. He tried again and the pressures kept dropping lower and lower on the low side. Due to time, he was not able to call supply houses for pricing on parts, so an estimate for the repair will be attached.

Two Old AC Units Low on R-22 in Franklinton

What we found and did

Manny found the pantry unit frozen solid from the evaporator to the compressor, so he could not assess it. He topped off the basement unit with 2 lbs. 8 oz. of R-22. The pantry unit needs to be turned off and defrosted, then checked for charge and a leak on the return visit. The basement unit needs a return visit on a weekday between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM to check the charge, which will help determine if it is a small or a large leak, and to perform a full leak search.

FAQ

AC Repair in Franklinton: questions answered

Answered by our licensed technicians serving Franklinton.

How quickly can you get to my home for an AC repair?

For standard AC repairs in the Apex, Cary, Raleigh, and surrounding areas, we typically offer same-day or next-day service. During peak summer months (June-August), demand is highest, so we recommend calling early in the day. Emergency repairs are prioritized and dispatched as quickly as possible.

How much does an AC repair cost?

Repair costs depend on the specific problem and parts needed. A capacitor replacement might run $150-$300, while a compressor replacement can range from $1,500-$2,500+. We charge a diagnostic fee to identify the problem, then provide a flat-rate repair quote before proceeding. The diagnostic fee is waived if you approve the repair.

Is it worth repairing my older AC system?

As a general guideline, if a repair costs more than 50% of a new system and your equipment is over 10 years old, replacement often makes more financial sense. We'll give you an honest assessment factoring in your system's age, repair history, efficiency, and the cost of the specific repair needed.

Why did my AC stop working on the hottest day?

This is extremely common. Peak heat days push your system to maximum capacity for extended periods. Components like capacitors, compressors, and fan motors that are already weakened by wear are most likely to fail under this extreme stress, similar to how a worn tire is most likely to blow out on a long highway drive.
