What Causes an AC to Cool Slowly in Cary?

What the customer reported

A Cary property in the 27519 area reported that the system was cooling but slowly, with pressures of 160 low side and 260 high side, and suspected there might be a blockage.

What we found and did

Bernard suspected a restricted or clogged indoor metering device after system pressures stayed unchanged during testing. He connected gauges and found operating pressures at approximately 180 PSI suction and 280 PSI liquid. He also found indoor airflow slightly below normal, verified the return filter was clean and the blower capacitor was within its rated specification, and moved the blower motor from the red low-speed tap to the black high-speed tap. He then recovered approximately 1 lb of refrigerant, and when pressures still did not fluctuate as expected, he scheduled a follow-up visit to replace the filter-drier in the condenser, remove and clean the indoor piston, and then pressure test, evacuate, and recharge the system to manufacturer specifications.

Result

After the blower speed change, Bernard confirmed improved blower operation, motor amp draw, and overall airflow, though system pressures remained unchanged pending the follow-up repair.

What Causes an AC to Leak Refrigerant in Cary?

What the customer reported

A Cary homeowner in the 27519 area requested service for a leak at the Schrader valve on their HVAC system.

What we found and did

Manny identified a refrigerant leak at the Schrader valve of the HVAC system, which could hinder system functionality and cooling performance. During the diagnostic he also detected a faulty contactor and recommended replacing it with a suitable part provided by the property, with professional installation, system diagnostics, and operational verification after repair to restore effective electrical control. He noted that any additional repairs for damaged wiring or components could be discussed further upon system evaluation.

Unit Keeps Freezing Up for Weeks in Cary

What the customer reported

A Cary homeowner reported the unit keeps freezing, and it started a couple of weeks ago.

What we found and did

Mario found a refrigerant restriction in both the cooling and heating side, indicating potential trash in the lines. He recommended replacing the outdoor TXV and filter dryer, cleaning the indoor piston, and flushing out the unit with nitrogen, which would take about six hours. Estimates were provided, and Mario noted that with potential trash in the line, there is a risk of a similar issue in the future.

Local conditions

Why quality refrigerant services matters in Cary

Airflow Challenges

Cary's suburban growth and tree canopy create unique airflow challenges, requiring properly sized HVAC systems to efficiently cool multi-story homes.

Humid Subtropical Climate

The area's humid subtropical climate with 90°F+ summer temperatures demands high-efficiency AC systems to manage energy costs and maintain comfort.

Aging Systems

Many Cary neighborhoods built in the 1990s-2000s have aging HVAC systems nearing replacement age, making preventive maintenance critical.

HOA Requirements

Local HOA regulations in Cary's planned communities often require specific equipment placement and noise level compliance for outdoor AC units.

FAQ

Refrigerant Services in Cary: questions answered

Answered by our licensed technicians serving Cary.

How do I know if my AC is low on refrigerant?

Common signs include: warm air from vents, system running constantly without reaching set temperature, ice on the refrigerant lines or evaporator coil, and higher than normal electricity bills. If you notice these symptoms during NC summer, call for a diagnosis promptly.

Why does refrigerant get low?

Unlike fuel, refrigerant doesn't get consumed. It circulates in a sealed system. Low refrigerant always means there's a leak somewhere. Simply adding more without fixing the leak is a temporary fix that wastes money and harms the environment.

My system uses R-22. What are my options?

R-22 production has been banned since 2020, making remaining supplies increasingly expensive ($75-$150+ per pound). Your options include repairing and recharging (short-term), converting to an R-410A-compatible system, or replacing with a new high-efficiency unit. We help you evaluate the most cost-effective path.

How much does a refrigerant recharge cost?

Costs depend on refrigerant type and amount needed. R-410A recharges typically run $200-$500. R-22 recharges can cost $500-$1,500+ due to scarce supply. We always provide a complete diagnosis and quote before performing any work.
